Ironically, rare are the compliments we get about mascara compared to those we get about lipstick or nail polish. And yet, picking mascara is always a complicated matter. Here is what to consider:

KNOW YOUR LASHES

Depending on the lashes, some brushes provide better results—smaller or non-bristle wands are good for short lashes because they get closer to the roots. For thin and blonde lashes, choose a soft bristle brush. And if you have stronger and darker lashes, rubber bristles are better to separate and comb lashes while creating more volume.

 GET THE RIGHT FORMULA

A lightweight formula is better for those looking for length and more natural results. If the formula is “wet,” you will get more volume, color, and density. Also check inside the tube to see how narrow the size of the inside rim is. The rim plays an important role for the mascara application, because it controls the product quantity on the brush. If the rim is too narrow, the brush will be too dry and provide no volume, and if it is too wide, your brush will be too wet, creating clumps.

 MASTER YOUR TECHNIQUE

Rolling the brush up takes serious mastering, so it is easier to wiggle the wand left to right starting at the lash roots. But try not to deposit too much mascara at the base—it will make your eyes look tired and heavy. Try to wiggle and stretch your movement up as much as possible to apply mascara evenly.

 PREP MAKES PERFECT

Using extra tools such as an eyelash curler or a lash brush help to separate lashes and apply mascara faster and easier.

 MAKE NO MISTAKE

Lastly, do not pump the brush in and out of the tube to try to get more product on the brush. This allows air and bacteria to get inside the tube and makes the formula dry faster. Also, do not roll the mascara too much on the inside tube wall. This can twist or damage the brush bristles.

The top selling mascara in the word and winner of many awards, you cannot go wrong with this mascara—it has a dual bristle wand great for volume.

Maybelline Volum’ Express Mega Plush, $7.99

This mascara features an exclusive gel-mousse formula and a patterned flexor brush for great results with volume and blackness.

Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara, $19.50

This one has a soft brush—perfect thinner lashes.

Yves Saint Laurent Shocking mascara, $30

These are the best for color—especially blue and purple. The result is classy, dense, and beautiful.

But music’s presence in the world of fashion lacked lustre until recently. This new age of “coolness” has encompassed Generation Y, and placed itself at the forefront of influence. A-Players like Kanye West, Azealia Banks, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are influencing fashion beyond what we thought possible. Essentially “modern day muses,” they collaborate with designers to have custom made wardrobes for their concerts, press tours &  promotional appearances. They wouldn’t be caught dead in anything less than extraordinary.

Azealia Banks for Alexander Wang T 2012

In every magazine and shop (brick and mortar and digital) high top sneakers, oversized camouflage, screen printed T-shirts, and baseball caps (not intended for leisurely use) are popping up. Recent collections from Neil Barrett and CELINE display a “downtown” cool edge, include sneakers, leather jumpers and baggy trousers to fill the closets of the fashion elite across the world.

More importantly, a closer look at designers such as Alexander Wang & Givenchy reveal a refined relationship with music that the designers have carefully curated over the past few years to build a stronger brand and larger cult following.

Ricardo Tisci & Kanye West

 With Ricardo Tisci at the helm of Givenchy since 2005, his Italian background has brought a rough edge to the Parisian label’s RTW and Haute Couture collections.  His ability to combine opulence with roughness, while paying a subtle homage to religion, has set him apart from all other designers. The Prince of Darkness, as he is commonly referred to, Tisci has positioned himself in the top spot. No surprise, his close relationship with pop-star Kanye West has given him more exposure and the ability to cultivate the kind of image he truly believes in. With impeccable design, combined with strong styling and a consistent aesthetic, Tisci has put Givenchy on the radar as one of the coolest brands to shop for in the 21st century.

Die Antwoord for Alexander Wang

As for the coolest kid on the block – Alexander Wang – well, he kept his relationships with music stars up close and personal. Collaborating with up and coming artists to create unique and compelling advertisement campaigns, Wang has put himself in a whole new category. His video campaigns depict artists such as hard-core rapper Azealia Banks, wearing his T collections in 60 second clip videos, spliced and pasted back together for optimal viewing. Simple yet visually compelling enough to make your shoulders sway and your foot tap, Wang brands his collections as hard as he parties after Fashion Week (no exaggeration intended).

Marilyn Manson for YSL Homme

It doesn’t stop there. Now more than ever, music influences are raging in the fashion world. Hedi Slimane, recently appointed Creative Director of YSL, has summoned music legends Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson and Beck to star in his 2013 ad campaigns.
