Locks We Love

One of the easiest ways to make a visible physical change for the New Year is to embrace the idea of a brand new hairstyle. There’s something about a new ’do for a new year that can help refresh both how we look and feel. If you’re looking to revamp your tresses, here are some styles to pull inspiration from.

BACK TO THE BOB
The bob is not exactly new, and neither is the idea of women chopping off all their hair—think back across the years to Britney Spears, Emma Watson, and now, Miley Cyrus. It appears for 2013, the trend is once again making a comeback, perhaps influenced by the Katie Holmes bob. The right bob can look great no matter what face shape, hair color, and age you are, so it is little wonder this style is once again being turned to. But beware, while it may seem low maintenance in terms of styling on the day-to-day, you will have to visit your salon for regular upkeep to keep the shape!

MOCK BOB
For those of us who are bit more shear-shy and not quite ready to commit to fully chopping our locks, give the mock bob a go. This style is a great way to get the look of the season without ever going near scissors. Simply tuck your ends underneath the rest of your hair and pin, playing around to find the desired bob length. A little backcombing and embellishment can make this style appropriate for more formal occasions as well.

HAIR JEWELRY
Speaking of embellishments, the spring 2013 runways were host to a variety of such hair pieces. Chanel had chignons topped with pearls, and Balenciaga made use of twisted gold wraparound ornaments, highlighting a trend dubbed as “hair jewelry.” Hair jewelry is a great way to embrace a new trend that is not at all difficult to work into your existing styling. The trend will go as far as you are willing to take it, whether it is simple like Chanel or over the top like Alexander McQueen’s honeycomb headpieces. And, if you are feeling crafty, you could even visit Pinterest for some ideas on creating your own hair jewelry!

A TWIST ON A CLASSIC KNOT
Each season it is easy to find a hairstyle that seems a little more runway than reality – for example last spring’s wet hair trend. But sometimes it is fun to inspire with the aspirational runway looks we may not necessarily achieve ourselves. Take for example the most recent Gucci runways. This slicked back bun with stiff extensions is unique and exciting. Meant to resemble a feather, it is much more chic than having a pencil or chopstick to add height and interest to the classic knot. Are you brave and talented enough to give it a go this new year?
