The review of film, music, art, and culture

Catch the latest Vogue documentary from HBO – In Vogue: In The Editor’s Eye. When you look at the success of fashion documentaries such as The Tents and The September Issue, as well as other film entertainment related to fashion such as The Devil Wears Prada, it is little wonder we have another to add to this list. Plus it seems the public is growing increasingly attached to the behind the scenes lives of fashion editors, always excited to learn more about them. In The Editor’s Eye certainly fulfills this desire what with its look back in the 120 year history of editors of the magazine, as well as some of the standout images and moments the magazine had along the way.
HBO’s The Girl explores the dark side of the relationship between actress Tippi Hendren and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock as they worked together on the hit suspense film The Birds. The drama behind the camera was not revealed until much later than it took place, but when word got out, the accusations were disturbing and shocking. While this film may portray the events in their most dramatic light, there is still no doubt that Hitchcock had some serious issues (see our article Muse and Master: Hitchcock and His Leading Ladies for a little more to this story). Though one may not have noticed it had she not been chosen to play her, Sienna Miller actually strikes an uncanny resemblance to Hendren, and serves the role well.

Danielle Steel: The Sins of the Mother
The Sins of the Mother is bestselling author Danielle Steel’s latest venture. True to her subject matter and style of previous works, this novel involves wealthy families facing difficult life situations and tense relationships within the family. However, this is one of Steel’s softer works, exploring the tension familiar to many women about simultaneously trying to balance career and family. Though it is not particularly intellectually stimulating, it makes for a good light read because it is relatable. Perhaps her ability to nail this feeling for such a wide range of readers is why Steel is the fourth bestselling novelist of all time.

Check out our Editor in Chief’s new favorite: Flight Facilities. This Australian duo came onto the scene in 2010 with the hit single “Crave You,” a tune with a ridiculously catchy chorus due likely to the rise and fall through various notes. Quick to catch on down under, their work is now being noticed in Europe and America as well. As DJs, they are not exactly focused on putting out full-length album after album like many bands, but rather they create sets, remixing and sampling various other songs. Whether you are looking to dance or looking to zone out while you get some serious work done, you will find that Flight Facilities can be your new go-to in any occasion.

Elles: Women Artists from the Centre Pompidou, Paris at the Seattle Art Museum
Seattle was lucky enough to score a collection of over 130 works of art organized by Paris’ Musee National d’Art Moderne. These works span the years 1907 to 2007, and various mediums as well – video, painting, sculpture, photography, and more. What is unique to this century of art is that all pieces were created by famous female artists such Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, and more. Thus, viewers will receive a tour through a century of major movements in art, all with a female perspective. The Seattle community is so excited about this exhibit that they have responded in a variety of other ways to promote awareness of women’s issues through artistic movements. The Seattle Psychoanalytic Society is lecturing about women’s images in art and literature in a lecture entitled “Images of Women,” and the Seattle Theater Group has a feature called “Voices of Strength” which was developed by women living and working in Africa.
Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
It is obvious that Andy Warhol served as one of the most important and influential artists of modernism, and now we have a chance to observe it visually. In this exhibit at the Met, forty-five original Warhol pieces are interspersed with one hundred works from sixty other artists who have been impacted by Warhol. Like a conversation between artists, the pieces have been curated and arranged to all play off and reinterpret each other in an exciting and unifying way. Plus, you can never go wrong with a trip to the Met. Running until December 31, see it before it closes!
