For a young fashion designer fresh out of school, Katie Gallagher is definitely establishing herself as someone to keep an eye on. This recent RISD graduate managed to attract the attention of Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness with her senior show, which debuted at NYFW for spring 2010. However, Gallagher definitely does not need celebrity endorsements to garner support for her clothing. Her ambition and point of view can help her achieve this on her own. The point of view for this collection entitled “Everything Forever,” was the idea of rebirth and purity for the soul despite the inflictions and sins that we may have encountered. The sheers and cutouts served as literal windows to this idea – that no matter what we try to cover up, we always carry with us the past. Angular and edgy black pieces intermingled with whites and ivories containing a well-placed ruffle here and there; a color palate that made sense given the inspiration. This also explains why Gallagher stayed in keeping with the contrasting hard and soft theme we have been seeing at so many of the collections thus far. The collection may have been a little bit narrow, as if Gallagher has not yet learned how to stray from falling into the trap of taking her own inspiration a little too literally. If she had tried to expand more than eighteen looks it may have been a flop. But all things considered, JENESEQUA is excited to watch her mature and develop her aesthetic, and see what she can do with a little more time and money.
