Summer months call for leisurely activities, as the sun-filled evenings wander late past bedtime hours. Even though the day was full of work and life demands, try to partake in the activities that only warmer months allow. To learn about events in your community, pick up a local paper, perusing locally based blogs or take a look at community bulletin boards around town. I’ve also discovered the local library is a great resource of what’s going on around town.
1. Farmers’ Markets
Usually opening in spring and running through fall, during the summer months, farmers markets begin to buzz as tourists are more readily about, music is played and fresh produce is at its peak.
2. Wine Tasting
Local wineries are usually open on weekends and more often during the summer months they tend to be open seven days a week for tastings. Spend an afternoon enjoying what the local vintners have to offer and then choose a few bottles to take home for upcoming dinner parties and soirees.
3. Book Signings & Readings
Again, book signings and readings are year round, but with the nicer weather, so many different venues come up with creative ways for you to meet the author.
4. Movies in the Park or Pool
Small towns and large metropolises usually have a location or two where the city projects classic movies in the park where onlookers can lay out a blanket, pack a meal and enjoy the company of their friend or date. And just this year, my local community is having movie night at the pool, maybe yours is too. Free to the public and what a wonderful way to revel in the bounty of summer?
5. Enjoy the water
Whether your town is landlocked, you live by the ocean’s shore or there is a wonderful lake to spend time on, take the time to commune with Mother Nature a bit more. Rent a canoe or kayak and spend a morning or late evening paddling around the lake’s edge or pack a summer tote for a few hours on the beach.
6. Amphitheaters
Outdoor entertainment is plentiful, and amphitheaters are a wonderful place to enjoy music festivals, symphonies, and your favorite artist perform. Find the schedule of events to see what is playing.
