Pour Some Sugar On Me

No, I’m not talking about the Def Leopard song popular in the 80′s, I am talking about a new hair removal trend, called sugaring. The ancient ritual said to be started in the Ottoman Empire, as early as 1200 CE. Sugar paste recipes and depictions of women performing the epilation have been discovered in hieroglyphics! Amazing right?

So why the hype? Sugaring is actually organic, as it’s a gooey ball of 98% sugar (the rest is lemon and water) and is both more effective, and less painful than waxing. The paste is molded on by hand, against the direction of hair growth, and flicked off in the the direction of growth. It’s closer to tweezing, really, and as a result the whole hair comes out from the root! Because the paste can’t adhere to live skin cells, it is generally reported to be less painful than normal waxing, and since there are no strips, no spatulas, and the same ball of paste is used for your whole service, it’s less waste and no double dipping!

Usually, I don’t fuss over my grooming habits (I pluck my own brows, or lack thereof, give myself mani & pedi’s, and use my own at-home bikini grooming kit), but, the curious beauty junkie in me had to try it out. I will say the first time I was sugared, I thought I would never try it again! Why? Because the person didn’t know what they were doing. I changed my mind the instant I met Lindsay Leggett McCarthy, owner of the Sugarist. Specializing in the tricky Brazilian, Lindsay is adept at making someone feel comfortable in a small room with a stranger (no easy feat when you are pants-less in tree pose) and has a wealth of knowledge about hair and skin, the process, and home care. A Seattle native who returned from traveling the globe 5 years ago, she spent nearly 3 years at the Sweet Spot in Fremont before opening the Sugarist in December.

The results? Clean, smooth skin, no bumps, even days after. I am a happy, hair-free camper.

At the moment she is outcall only, so can come to you!
