The week is halfway over, Monday is behind you, but nothing will feel as good as when Friday arrives and you know you have had a productive week and your home is still presentable. But how is that possible with the busy schedules so many of us keep?
If when Wednesday rolls around and your home includes piles of mail, heaps of clothes from deciding which outfit you are wearing each day to a kitchen that could use some attention, try these 5 minutes fixes to maintain organization, clarity and therefore, tranquility each day when you walk in the door after a hectic day.
1. Whatever you take out, put back.
A simple rule that is often skipped because of its simplicity is the habit of putting back anything that you have decided to use. A blanket out of the closet – fold it up and put it back when you’re done (the same day), books and magazines you are reading – put them back on the shelf or in the magazine bin, beauty supplies each morning as you are getting ready – put them back in their caddy, bin or drawer before going to work or play.
2. Do the dishes as you use them.
Waiting to do all of the dishes at the end of the day or after two busy days is sometimes pure torture because the task is not that inviting. As you are cooking or when you use any of your dishes, put them in the dishwasher or in their rightful spot immediately after use. This will leave your kitchen cleaner and more presentable no matter what time of day.
3. Pamper you clothes
You know that chair or bench in your bedroom? The one that is rarely used for its intended function – sitting? Well, if you’re anything like me, it often becomes my temporary closet as the week’s clothes pile up, and by Friday I can look at it and quickly be reminded of the week-that-was with regards to my fashion choices. This is not a good habit to get into. First of all, your bedroom will always look disheveled, but more importantly, your clothes deserved to be taken care of. At the end of each try-on session, place clothes on their intended hangers or fold them neatly and put them in their designated spot. Not only will you not have to be reminded of that bad date on Tuesday, but your clothes will last longer as well.
4. Straighten before you leave.
Whatever room you spend time in, before leaving it and turning off the lights, straighten it up. Tuck the chair in, fold the blanket, pick up the extra stuff that is sitting on the tables or, if it’s your bedroom – make the bed. Such a simple habit allows for your next visit to each room to be inviting and a breath of fresh air, as you don’t have to put any work into it before doing what you had come there to do in the first place.
