Bungalow 5 founder Luca Rensi and team have done an incredible job honing in on the gap of affordable AND original AND chic home decor. JNSQ recently had the good fortune to visit the Bungalow 5 showroom in New York City and left with major decor lust! Our mission: we wanted an expert’s opinion on decorating with color, in particular Pantone’s color of the year, Tangerine.
JNSQ: Why did you start Bungalow5?
LUCA: It seems to us that the options have been shrinking for well-designed furniture with a stylish point of view. Large format stores have largely replaced all of the boutiques across the country. Where’s one to go for a little glam at an affordable price? The answer is Bungalow 5!
JNSQ: What is the Bungalow 5 style mission?
LUCA: “Spread style throughout the world!”
JNSQ: What are a few tips on incorporating punchy and trendy color in your home?
LUCA: Adding a punch of color is the easiest way to bring some glamour and interest to a room; the same way a bright scarf can spice up an outfit. For example, my living room in New York City is decorated in predominantly browns and beiges; hardly exciting color wise. A rather large antique Japanese screen hanging in the room incorporates turquoise and bright blue into its scenery. Using the colors in the screen as a reference, I chose turquoise lamps, garden stools and other accessories to bring some drama into the décor.
JNSQ: How would you style the Melrose Lamps in Tangerine? Where would you put them?
LUCA: Because they are so slender and delicate looking as well as colorful and glamorous, I’d be tempted to use the lamps in a setting which calls for drama like an entry way. The Melrose lamps placed as a pair on a high gloss lacquer console flanked by a pair of chairs with possibly a touch of orange in the fabric and a very moody wall finish could be very chic. That being said, because of their limed oak base, they could be equally as comfortable on either side of comfy sofa at the beach on white lacquered grasscloth tables.
