New year, new start, right? Not necessarily.
If you are anything like me, you want to redecorate every season, and especially at the new year. But that can get very expensive indeed, and doesn’t encourage us to invest in those key pieces for our homes, which get better with age. So, if you have itchy feet and are feeling the need to make a change, there are lots of things you can do without breaking the bank! Here are just a few to get you started..
1. Change the pillow covers and/or the drapery, upholstery fixes can turn your space from drab to fab in an instant, and if you are really clever, you can buy the material and make them yourself. HGTV tells us how.
2. Add (or remove!) a rug. Layering is a great way to feel cosy in the colder months, and layering rugs is no exception, it gives the floor more interest, and if you pick a soft texture, can also greatly improve the feeling under your feet. There are so many options which can totally transform your space, without you having to declare bankruptcy. Here are some examples from Houzz.com.
3. Swap out table linens. Tables, particularly those we dine on, are such a focal point in a home that changing tablecloths, napkins, and even flatware can help to add just the right amount of ‘fresh’ to a room.
4. Paint the walls! Walls are one of the few elements in a room which can make it feel brand new in a flash. Literally. Depending on the size of your room (and your experience with paint!), it takes a relatively short amount of time, is pretty cost effective, and there are so many options that there is always something which will work with your existing decor. Oh, and it can always be painted over if you can your mind with the seasons! Remember to look for those low-VOC paints, and check out Farrow & Ball and Benjamin Moore for some great color options.
5. Buy flowers, and display them around your home. This is by far the easiest, and cheapest option, and possibly my favorite for those reasons! Flowers add instant freshness and color, so even if you aren’t craving some new decor, I think you should just go and treat yourself anyway, it’s the new year afterall.
