JNSQ&A: Sundance Style off the Slopes

Our very first JNSQ&A in 2012!

Q: Can I request a post on what to wear to Sundance? I’m going for the first time in January and have no idea what to wear when not on the slopes, especially to the nighttime events/parties.

A: I have never been to Sundance but I am not a stranger to the Apres Ski scene and one thing that holds true from my experience and also looking at photos is that Sundance style is pretty low key and casual, so don’t go all out “ski bunny” or you will LOOK like a tourist. Instead opt for cozy, albeit chic, layers for day and for night, add a touch of glam with some (faux) fur to your ensemble.

Center your outfits around one key piece to keep packing light, like a blanket sweater. This ASOS Aztec Blanket Cardigan ($80) shall do the trick. Great layering piece and likely warm enough (if you add a few key  layers underneath) to keep you warm and looking fantastic while traipsing through the celeb ridden crowds during the day. Add sunglasses warm topper, and some skinny dark jeans. For night, add leather leggings ($90), black turtleneck and a faux fur vest ($118) . Layers are your best friend as you can take the cardi sweater off indoors and break up the all black with the vest.

Let’s talk footwear. You must get snow boots or shoes that will keep the feet warm/dry with traction so the clumsy girl in you (I guess I should speak for myself!) doesn’t have an incident. I am LOVING the Hunter Chatel boots ($90). Half space age – half Chanelesque. But if these things are too literal for you, you can always go with the traditional Hunter (assuming you have them??!). Animal print Welly socks ($40) will add warmth and style to the utilitarian look to the boot. To dress your ensemble up for night, switch your boots to a nice pair of tall riders (the YSL’s pictured above are calf hair!).

Get shopping and packing as the festival starts January 19th!
